Spirometry Testing at Ninox Health Buderim & Chancellor Park

Spirometry is a quick, non-invasive test that provides valuable information about how well your lungs are functioning. Our Buderim and Chancellor Park clinics offer this test to help diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions.

If your doctor has recommended a spirometry test, you might be wondering what it involves and why it’s needed. Spirometry is a quick, non-invasive test that gives your doctor valuable information about how well your lungs are working.

Why Might I Need a Spirometry Test?

Your doctor may suggest spirometry if you:

  • Have a persistent cough, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  • Have asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), or symptoms that could be linked to these conditions
  • Are a smoker or ex-smoker and want to check your lung function
  • Need a baseline test for ongoing monitoring of a known lung condition
  • Are starting or reviewing certain medications that affect breathing
  • Require it as part of a work place medical examination

What Does Spirometry Measure?

Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe in and out, and how fast you can blow air out. It helps assess:

  • How well your lungs are functioning
  • Whether you have a lung condition like asthma or COPD
  • The severity of any lung problems
  • How well your treatment is working, if you already have a diagnosis

What Happens During the Test?

A nurse will guide you through the test. Here’s what to expect:

  • You’ll take a deep breath in, then blow out as hard and fast as you can into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometry machine
  • You may be asked to repeat the test a few times to make sure the results are accurate
  • Sometimes, the test is repeated after using an inhaler (called a bronchodilator) to see how your lungs respond

The whole process usually takes about 15–30 minutes, and it’s completely safe.

What Should I Know Before My Spirometry Test?

To get the most accurate results, keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid smoking for at least 24 hours before the test
  • Don’t drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal beforehand
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing so you can take full breaths
  • If you use inhalers, follow the instructions given by your doctor – you may be asked to withhold certain medications before the test

If you’re unsure about anything you’re taking, check with our team beforehand.

After the Spirometry Test

Once the test is complete, your doctor will go over the results with you. They’ll explain what they mean, and whether any further steps or treatment are needed.
