Understanding ECGs: What to Expect and Why They Matter
If your doctor has recommended an ECG (Electrocardiogram), you might be wondering what it is, why you need it, and what to expect. Don’t worry – an ECG is a quick, painless, and very useful test that helps us look after your heart health.
Why Might I Need an ECG?
Your doctor may request an ECG for a number of reasons, such as:
- You’re experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or palpitations
- You have a history of heart problems or a family history of heart disease
- You’re starting a new medication that could affect your heart
- You’re having a routine check-up, especially if you have risk factors like high blood pressure or diabetes
What Can an ECG Show?
An ECG helps your doctor see how your heart is working by recording its electrical activity. It can show:
- If your heart is beating too fast, too slow, or irregularly (arrhythmias)
- Changes in the heart muscle that may indicate strain or damage
- Other heart-related conditions that may need further investigation
What Happens During the Test?
An ECG is very straightforward:
- You’ll be asked to lie down and relax
- A nurse or technician will place small, sticky patches (electrodes) on your chest, arms and legs
- These electrodes are connected to a machine that records your heart’s electrical signals
The test itself only takes a few minutes, and it doesn’t hurt. You don’t need to do anything special during the test – just lie still and breathe normally.
What Should I Know Before My ECG?
There’s usually nothing you need to do to prepare for an ECG. However:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily removed or adjusted – you may need to remove your top
- Avoid using creams or lotions on your skin on the day of the test, as they can make it harder for the electrodes to stick
- If you have a lot of chest hair, we may need to shave small areas so the electrodes can make good contact
After the ECG
Once the ECG is done, your doctor will review the results. They’ll explain what the findings mean and let you know if any further tests or treatment are needed.
