Why Nearly One in Three Aussies Lives with Musculoskeletal Pain
The Hidden Health Crisis Down – What Does ‘Musculoskeletal’ Mean?
The term musculoskeletal refers to the body’s muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage—essentially the framework that keeps us upright, moving, and supported. Think of it like your body’s engine and suspension system combined: bones provide structure, muscles provide movement, and joints, ligaments, and tendons keep everything connected and flexible.
When something goes wrong in this system—whether through injury, wear-and-tear, or disease—it’s called a musculoskeletal condition. These include common problems like back pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, and joint injuries. In short, if it helps you move, it’s part of the musculoskeletal system, and when it isn’t working properly, it can affect every aspect of daily life.
How Common Are Musculoskeletal Conditions in Australia?
Musculoskeletal conditions are far more widespread than many realise. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), in 2022 nearly 7.3 million Australians—almost 29% of the population—reported living with a chronic musculoskeletal condition. Among these:
- Back problems affected around 16%
- Arthritis about 15%
- Osteoporosis or osteopenia around 3.4%
These conditions are most prevalent in older Australians. Around 69% of people aged 75 and over have a musculoskeletal condition, and women are particularly affected, especially by osteoporosis, which is five times more common in women than men. Comorbidities are also common, with many individuals experiencing multiple chronic conditions alongside their musculoskeletal issues.
The Impact on Health, Work, and Society
Musculoskeletal conditions are more than just an inconvenience. They are a leading cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia. Back problems and arthritis were among the top conditions causing long-term disability, affecting independence, mobility, and quality of life.
The economic cost is also substantial. In 2019–20, musculoskeletal conditions accounted for approximately $14.6 billion in healthcare spending, making them one of the most expensive disease groups in Australia. Beyond healthcare costs, these conditions contribute significantly to lost productivity, with studies estimating the equivalent of 41,000 full-time jobs lost each year due to musculoskeletal-related work absences.
Why Musculoskeletal Medicine Matters
Musculoskeletal conditions may sound technical, but their impact is very real. With nearly one in three Australians living with musculoskeletal pain, this isn’t just about sore backs or stiff knees—it’s a major public health issue that affects quality of life, independence, and productivity.
Musculoskeletal medicine focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing problems of the muscles, bones, and joints, supporting people to move more freely and live healthier lives. From tailored exercise and rehabilitation programs to managing pain and preventing long-term complications, musculoskeletal medicine plays a critical role in keeping Australians active and strong.
At the start, we described the musculoskeletal system as your body’s engine and suspension. Building on that idea, if your musculoskeletal system is the engine keeping you moving, then musculoskeletal medicine is the lubricant that keeps it running smoothly, reducing wear and tear and helping prevent unexpected breakdowns. It may not always be visible, but it’s essential to maintaining health and mobility.
